The colours blended into each other. From one surface to the next, they aligned perfectly. Textures glistening, shadows giving highlights sweet, sweet compliments… allowing them to radiate and sing their own songs. Light bounced around me, and it created a beautiful noise, yet at the same time, managed to be completely silent. I was alone and so aware of this. My own breath underneath the makeshift sun-barrier I wore, was loudly reminding me of my mere size in this vast space. My bare feet sizzled on the hot sand as I ignored the warning signs to only enter with covered shoes and at least a litre of water. Instead I carried a tripod, two cameras and a sack of lenses, making my excursion all the more tiring as I fumbled along the sandy ‘paths’ created by wind.
It was pure peace as I worked my way across the endless number of white peaks, the setting sun forever changing the landscape I photographed. For the few hours I was at the White Sands, I can honestly say I’ve never been as thirsty in my life. I kept walking out, away from my car and water supply, because I couldn’t stop. Ha, it pays to heed the warnings I guess.
Here’s a quick sum up of my time in New Mexico (which was mostly cheap hotel rooms and The White Sands). I did spend a couple of days in Santa Fe first, which is a gorgeous city full of incredible architecture and talented artists. You can find the best jewellery there too if you head to the town square. Until next time!
